Come Here

A family from Boston moved to eastern West Virginia, just across the Shenandoah Mountains. People like us are called "come-heres" but not to our faces.

Out of the Fog

We have spent two days in blowing fog, clouds and light rain. I had reason to drive to and from North Mountain several times, passing in and out of cloud cover. It was beautiful, the only real loss being two nights of moonlight. It was pleasant to wake up to moonlight again this morning, since there are only a few days of night-time moonlight in this cycle.

Paul Mallow, the farmer across the road, is building a new barn. A trailer truck brought in a half-dozen roof trusses and off-loaded them beside the road. Paul attached his forklift to the tractor and carried them one by one to the top of the hill. Warping slightly as they hung from the forklift, the trusses looked a little like Wright flyers or big butterflies, half-seen through the fog.
