Come Here

A family from Boston moved to eastern West Virginia, just across the Shenandoah Mountains. People like us are called "come-heres" but not to our faces.

The Apples Are Drying

After one week, the apples I strung and hung in the kitchen window are about 20% of their former selves in size. However, they are not truly dry to the touch yet. They have curled up, and the inner surfaces especially are still moist. It makes me aware of how much water there is in everything alive.

Yesterday I observed that at last all the apples seem to be off the tree. It is still covered with leaves, but many are dark and dried up.
