Ghost Deer in the Gloaming
Not having seen any deer for several days, I went out to find them in the gloaming. You can do that -- there will always be some to see.
A yearling was investigating the underside of the grape arbor, where I think the grapes are no more than raisins at this point in the season. He thought about me for quite a while (that would be 10-12 seconds) before bounding over two fences to a farther field where he stood for a long time staring at me.
Up on the side hill, there were three or four more. By then, it was so dark that I couldn't see them clearly. They were just uncanny shadows drifting across a lighter darkness.
