Come Here

A family from Boston moved to eastern West Virginia, just across the Shenandoah Mountains. People like us are called "come-heres" but not to our faces.

Come-Heres

I was warned, before I came to West Virginia, that I would always be a "come-here" - someone who wasn't born here. And I thought then, "and so?" and I still do. No one makes a fuss about my origins, and I'm not inclined to rush in and improve everything I see -- or even to criticize it -- so although I am a "come-here," I am not a bad one.

Somewhere I read that my bumper sticker should say, "I'm not from West Virginia, but I got here as soon as I could." On a good day, that's how I feel.
